Sailing Foundation of New York and New York Yacht Club Raise $150,000 for US Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Program
Portsmouth, R.I. (August 5, 2010) – The Sailing Foundation of New York raised an impressive $150,000 for the US Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Program last weekend at the Golden Spinnaker Regatta and Gala. Hosted by the New York Yacht Club at Harbour Court in Newport, the successful day and evening event celebrated the hard work, team work and dedication required to achieve success at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
"Once again, the Sailing Foundation of New York, along with New York Yacht Club, has stepped forward in dramatic fashion to support the US Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Program and our athletes. Their generous support will enable our athletes to perform at the highest levels and achieve their goals,” said Olympic Sailing Chairman Dean Brenner (Wallingford, Conn.). “It was truly a spectacular event, from start to finish.”
On Saturday morning, donors teamed up with US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) members and Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls in New York Yacht Club’s fleet of Sonars for the regatta portion of the event. They were able to finish seven races in optimal racing conditions. The festivities continued on the back lawn overlooking Newport Harbor for the cocktail hour and silent auction, which showcased popular items such as a week-long vacation in Jackson Hole and a Jaguar driving school. After cocktails, US SAILING President Gary Jobson (Annapolis, Md.) emceed the gala dinner before the live auction bidding began.
Dinner-goers had the opportunity to bid on a vacation to Barbuda, a chance to crew for Olympic Medalists Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, Fla.) or Zach Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) in the Bitter End Pro Am and a VIP weekend at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, the 24 hour endurance race. The highlight of the live auction was the chance to bid on two ready-to-race Laser sailboats donated by LaserPerformance and signed by USSTAG members Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) and Kyle Rogachenko (Collegeville, Pa.). LaserPerformance, a silver sponsor of the team, has agreed to annually donate two sailboats to be auctioned off at fundraisers. The proceeds will directly benefit Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls. A strong force in the international Laser Radial fleet, Railey added her credo and signature to the auctioned Radial bearing her name: “Sail fast and never give up!” She also drew a makeshift button to push for “Paige Railey speed.” Her USSTAG teammate, Rogachenko, rigged a standard Laser bearing his name and signed it with the message, “If anyone asks, this is the boat to follow!”
“We are extremely proud of the support we are lending to the team,” said New York Yacht Club’s Phil Lotz (Newport, R.I.). “It’s our responsibility as a country and as a sport to step up to the plate and make sure that our team is given enough resources to perform at their best in Weymouth in 2012.”
Thanks to their generous support, US SAILING has recognized New York Yacht Club as a Gold Medal Partner Club, joining the ranks of St. Francis Yacht Club. The Olympic Sailing Program would also like to thank the all of the generous donors, event organizers, the Sailing Foundation of New York and the event sponsors of LaserPerformance, AlphaGraphics, Atlantis WeatherGear, Bitter End Yacht Club, Christie’s, Coco Point Lodge, ESS International, and Rolex Watch USA, Inc. AlphaGraphics, the team’s title sponsor, was represented by CEO Kevin Cushing, as well as franchise owners Miles and Elizabeth Tullo, John and Lisa Ryan, Carmen and Victoria Camerato, and Joe and Ellie Vasta.
Over the past seven years, the Sailing Foundation of New York has raised more than $4 million for the US Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Program and other organizations that promote the sport of sailing.
