USSTAG Members Launch National Speaking Tour at Riverside Yacht Club, Beverly Yacht Club

Portsmouth, R.I. (February 23, 2010) -- The Olympic Sailing Program launched the 2010 National Speaking Tour this past weekend at Riverside Yacht Club in Greenwich, Conn., and Beverly Yacht Club in Marion, Mass. The Tour provides sailing enthusiasts and budding athletes an insider’s glimpse into the US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics members’ journeys to the 2012 Olympic/Paralympic Games.

RYC Feb 2010 034More than 80 people attended the Riverside Yacht Club event, which US SAILING President Gary Jobson emceed. Jobson presented video and provided commentary from the 2008 Olympic Games, including USSTAG’s Anna Tunnicliffe’s Olympic gold medal win in the Laser Radial. Jobson then posed questions to Olympic Sailing Chairman Dean Brenner about the program’s goals and successes, as well as Tunniclffe and her teammates, Molly Vandemoer and Deb Capozzi, about their Olympic experiences. The USSTAG members discussed what it takes to succeed at the Olympic level and their goals for 2012. Tunnicliffe, Vandemoer and Capozzi also gave advice to young sailors in the junior program about how to continue sailing at the college and Olympic levels. The young sailors had the opportunity to take pictures with the USSTAG members and even wear Tunnicliffe’s Olympic gold medal.

On Saturday, the National Tour moved up the East Coast to Marion, Mass., for an event sponsored by the Beverly Yacht Club. More than 100 members and guests attended the presentation, during which Brenner introduced the members of the team and outlined their accomplishments. Brenner asked the athletes questions about how they came together as a team and what challenges lie ahead. There were a number of high school sailors in the crowd, including a group from the perennial sailing powerhouse Tabor Academy. Everyone was invited back to the BYC for a reception in honor of the athletes and a photo opportunity. The photos were printed on-site thanks to the local New Bedford AlphaGraphics, which is owned by Joe and Ellie Vasta, so athletes were able to autograph the photos for attendees that evening.

“The Beverly Yacht Club is so proud to have hosted the second stop on the team’s National Tour,” said Vice Commodore Ray Cullum. “It is really extraordinary how humble these women are in light of their extraordinary achievements. They had special impact on the junior sailors in the audience making time to speak to all of them personally after the event. It was very exciting for our members to see the team up close and we wish the USSTAG the best of luck all the way to Weymouth 2012.”
