National Team Works Toward 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
Portsmouth, R.I. (July 20, 2011) – US SAILING, the national governing body for the sport, and the Olympic Sailing Committee (OSC) are proud to announce the 16 athletes selected to represent the U.S. at the 2011 Weymouth and Portland International Regatta, the London 2012 Olympic Test Event. Held Aug. 2-13 at the Portland National Sailing Academy, in Weymouth, U.K., the venue for the 2012 Olympic Games, the regatta is designed to replicate the Games atmosphere and will host 460 sailors representing 66 nations. Exclusive photos, video interviews and reports from the racecourse will be posted on USSTAG’s website, Facebook and Twitter channels.
Athletes representing the USA in the nine fleet racing Olympic classes were selected as the top-performing American athletes competing in June’s Sail for Gold regatta, the sixth event on the ISAF (International Sailing Federation) World Cup circuit. The Women’s Match Racing team was selected at the 2011 WMR Qualifying Regatta #2, held May 11-15, in Sheboygan, Wis. Fifteen of the athletes are members of USSTAG.

“This is our team’s last major test in Weymouth before the Olympic Games, and it’s the ultimate dress rehearsal for 2012,” said Olympic Sailing Chairman Dean Brenner (Wallingford, Conn.) “It’s an honor for the athletes who have earned the right to compete in this event, and we’re looking forward to seeing what Team USA can do.”
