MEDIA ALERT: U.S. Team Prepped and Ready for London 2012 Olympic Test Event

Summary: Weymouth, U.K. – August 1

As the U.S. Team selected to compete at the London 2012 Olympic Test Event finishes the final details of preparation at the USA compound, the focus turns to the next 12 days of Olympic class competition at the 2011 Weymouth and Portland International Regatta. Women’s Match Racing is the first class up in the staggered schedule of racing that will take place across five courses on Portland Harbor and Weymouth Bay. Designed to test the Olympic sailing venue and its operations in advance of the 2012 Games, the London 2012 Olympic Test Event takes place August 2-13 and will welcome 460 sailors competing in 10 Olympic classes.

What: 2011 Weymouth and Portland International Regatta, London 2012 Olympic Test Event

Where: Venue is the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, Weymouth, U.K., located 120 miles south of London.

The Team: The U.S. Team is comprised of 16 athletes – nine men, seven women.

Olympic Equipment (Event):  Finn (Heavyweight Dinghy); Laser Radial (Women’s One Person Dinghy); Laser (Men’s One Person Dinghy); 470 Men (Men’s Two Person Dinghy); 470 Women (Women’s Two Person Dinghy); 49er (Men’s Two Person Dinghy High Performance); RS:X (Men’s Windsurfer); RS:X (Women’s Windsurfer); Star (Men’s Keelboat); and Elliott 6m (Women’s Match Racing), which is making its debut at the 2012 Games.

The Regatta: As one of 42 test events planned by the London 2012 Organising Authority (LOCOG) as part of the London Prepares series that runs from the end of May 2011 through to May 2012.
