Direct Support to Athletes by Sailing Foundation of New York and New York Yacht Club
Portsmouth, R.I. (February 28, 2012) – The Sailing Foundation of New York raised an impressive $150,000 for the US Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Program at the Golden Spinnaker Gala. Hosted on Feb. 16 by New York Yacht Club at its iconic clubhouse in Manhattan, the evening event celebrated the hard work, team work and dedication required to achieve success at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The event was sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A., Inc. and Vineyard Vines.
"As we count down the days to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Sailing Foundation of New York and the New York Yacht Club, generously hosted a spectacular evening of support for the US Olympic and Paralympic Teams and our athletes,” said Olympic Sailing Chairman Dean Brenner (Wallingford, Conn.). “With fewer than 150 days of training left before the Games, this significant support will enable our athletes to bring home medals to the USA.”

A live auction, presented by Christie’s, was the highlight of the evening. The highlight of the auction was the “Olympic experience” package which consisted of coveted sold-out tickets to the 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, women’s beach volley ball and three days of sailing competition.
Dinner-goers had the opportunity to bid on a vacation to the Bitter End Pro Am, fully outfitted crew gear by Atlantis WeatherGear, and a VIP weekend at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, the 24 hour endurance race, and two ready-to-race Laser sailboats donated by LaserPerformance, a silver sponsor of the US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics, and signed by Olympic Team members Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) and Rob Crane (Darien, Conn.).
“We are proud to support the Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Teams,” said New York Yacht Club’s Bill Sandberg (Riverside, Conn.), who co-chaired the Gala organizing committee with Joey Moffitt (Norwalk, Conn.). “It’s our responsibility as a country and as a sport to step up to the plate and make sure that our team is given enough resources to perform at their best in Weymouth in 2012.”
The Olympic Sailing Program would also like to thank all of the generous donors, event organizers and committee members, the Sailing Foundation of New York and the event sponsors of Rolex Watch U.S.A., Inc, Christie’s, Ferrero Rocher, LaserPerformance, Atlantis WeatherGear and Bitter End Yacht Club.
Over the past nine years, the Sailing Foundation of New York has raised more than $4 million for the US Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Program and other organizations that promote the sport of sailing.
