2011 US Sailing Team Selection

Selection to the 2011 US Sailing Team

Annual Selection to the US Sailing Team will be determined by the same system we use to grade athletes’ performance for Direct Athlete Support** (A1, A2, A3, A4).

**2011 Funding Levels (Based on 2010 Results)

Level Achieve the following

A1

Finish top 3 at 2010 World Championship

A2

Score A in minimum 3 eligible 2010vents

A3

Score B in minimum 3 eligible 2010vents

A4

Score C in minimum 3 eligible 2010 events

Here is the process:

1.  Athletes qualify for  the US Sailing Team through on-the-water performance and will remain on the US Sailing Teamuntil one of three things happens:

a.  They resign from The US Sailing Team or retire from active Olympic class competition;

b.  They are removed by the Olympic Sailing Committee (OSC) for a Code of Conduct violation;

c.  The calendar year concludes and a new Team is named.

2.  Every athlete or team that achieves A1, A2, A3, or A4 performance at 2010 events is qualified for The US Sailing Team for 2011 in the class in which they have qualified. All qualified athletes must then sign The US Sailing Team Athlete Agreement and Code of Conduct for final placement on US Sailing Team, after which they will be offered an optional US Sailing Team Commercial Agreement to sign.

3.  The top USA team or athlete not already qualified under paragraph #2 above that also finishes in the top 10% (rounded inclusively up to the next whole boat) of the fleet at the US SAILING’s 2011 Rolex Miami OCR (RMOCR) qualifies for the 2011 Team. [EXAMPLE: In a fleet of 75 lasers, we would round the 10% rule up to include 8 boats.] The OSC may choose to adjust the necessary percentage required based on the attendance levels at RMOCR, and will announce this within 1 week of entries closing for the regatta.

a.  For Women’s Match Racing, the qualifying event will be the Team Qualifier to be held in Elliott 6s, in Miami, in January 2011.

4.  In events where only one athlete or team qualifies based on paragraphs 1, 2, or 3 above, then the top previously unqualified USA boat at RMOCR (or any alternate event listed in paragraph 3 above) qualifies for The US Sailing Team.

5.  In events where zero athletes or teams qualify based on the paragraphs above, then the top two USA boats at RMOCR (or any alternate event listed in paragraph 3 above) qualify for The US Sailing Team.

6.  If RMOCR (or any alternate event listed in paragraph 3 above) is a non-event, then this path onto The US Sailing Team is closed for 2011.

7.  In double-handed events, both members of the team must compete and qualify together as a team.

8.  In women’s match racing, the skippers will qualify for The US Sailing Team through the system described above, and then will nominate to the OSC the two crew she would like named along with her. All funding will be paid to the skipper, and the OSC expects skippers and their crews to determine how to manage their team’s expenses.

Qualification for 2011 Olympic Test Event

1.  All USA entries (one per event) at the 2011 Olympic Test Event in Weymouth, England (August 1-14, 2011) will be awarded to the highest finishing USA boat from each class at the 2011 Sail For Gold regatta (June5-11, 2011). All entries must be confirmed by June 20, 2011.
